A regular Crayola crayon is 3⅝ inches long.

3⅝ in ≈ 92.1 mm

That's a regular-size Crayola crayon — a little over 9 centimetres, and a handy rough mental ruler.

Manufacturer-specified

Why this is interesting

A regular crayon is a surprisingly handy rough mental ruler: a little over 9 centimetres long.

It's a manufacturer reference size, though. A well-used crayon from the bottom of the box will be shorter.

How this measurement works

Crayola lists its regular-size crayons as 3⅝ in × 5/16 in. That length converts to 92.075 mm, or about 9.21 cm. It applies to regular-size crayons, not every Crayola product.

The first box of eight Crayola crayons cost a nickel

Crayola says it produced its first box of eight crayons in 1903 and sold it for 5 cents — one nickel. The connection is the denomination, not the coin: this doesn't mean a 1903 nickel matched today's coin specification.

Where the name came from

Alice Binney, wife of the company's founder, coined the name Crayola. Crayola says it comes from “craie”, the French word for chalk, and “ola” from oleaginous.

How certain is this?

Manufacturer-specified reference · historically documented. Crayola gives the 3⅝ in regular-size length; the 1903 five-cent box and the name's origin come from Crayola's own history pages.
