About Scaleidoscope
Scaleidoscope is a different kind of measurement converter. It combines useful conversions with historical units, scientific measurements, regional systems, unusual comparisons, and the stories behind the ways humans have measured the world.
The idea is simple: see measurement differently.
More than a unit converter
Type in a quantity and you get the ordinary, useful answer. Stay a moment longer and the same quantity opens out into historical, regional, scientific, unusual and real-world ways of understanding it.
The goal is not only to answer how much? It is just as interested in questions like:
- Where did this unit come from?
- Who used it?
- Why did people measure things this way?
- How certain is its modern value?
- What would this measurement look like in the real world?
Useful first — but built to reward curiosity.
Accuracy matters
Not every measurement in history had one universal value. A unit could shift with the place, the period, the ruler who declared it, the trade that used it, the legal standard of the day, and the evidence that happened to survive.
So Scaleidoscope labels what kind of value you are looking at: exact or standardised, historically documented, historically reconstructed, approximate, a range, variant-dependent, disputed, informal or humorous, fictional-defined, and occasionally pseudoscientific or discredited where it is included purely for educational context. These categories do not carry equal weight, and the labels are there so you never have to guess which one you have.
That is why a result sometimes says “approximate” or “reconstructed” rather than giving you a confident number. Scaleidoscope shows uncertainty rather than hiding it.
Where the measurements come from
Values are drawn from credible, citable sources: international and national measurement standards, government bodies, universities, museums, scholarly publications, archaeological research, primary historical documents and official organisations.
Where a historical measurement has meaningful geographic, chronological or legal variants, those differences are preserved instead of being quietly averaged into one supposedly universal value. A cubit in one city was not a cubit in the next, and the site says so.
And then there are the rabbit holes
Numbers are easier to feel than to read, so Scaleidoscope also offers real-world comparisons: Gateway Arches, Eiffel Towers, giraffes, Saturn Vs, blue whales. These are comparisons, not measurement units — nobody has ever standardised a giraffe. They exist to give you an intuitive sense of scale and to make a measurement stick in your head.
Utility, history, science, curiosity and a little absurdity. The rabbit hole is a feature — it should just always lead back to something credible.
Who made this?
Scaleidoscope was created and built by Mic Schut, a designer and builder with a weakness for useful ideas that turn into rabbit holes.
A special tip of the measuring stick to Stephen Dunsford, who helped kick off the original idea and encouraged the rabbit hole from the beginning.
