Akan gold-weight system

Akan merchants used portable cast-metal weights with balance scales to measure gold dust. Individual weights had to conform to specific masses, but their shapes did not encode one fixed value.

Smithsonian says Akan smiths made these weights for more than five centuries; the Met describes geometric and figurative traditions and links the system to internal and coastal trade.

Modern use is context-dependent and varies by region or measurement system.
